The Deutsche Edelstahlwerke in Witten that was founded by Carl Ludwig Berger in 1853.

It is one of the oldest steel mills on the Ruhr and famous for it’s many inventions.

Changing names frequently the mill grew rapdidly in the late 19th century. In 1907 an open hearth shop was installed.

From the 1920ies to the late 1940ies DEW, Witten became part of the Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG.

In 1957 the Gusstahlwerk Witten GmbH installed the first BOF vessel in Germany (32 tons) supplied with iron by a cupola furnace.

In 1973 a 50 ton EAF was installed.

The open hearth shop closed in 1981, the last in the Thyssen group (of which Witten was part now) and replaced by a new 110 ton UHP EAF with bottom tapping which is still used by now.

The mill is producing speciality steel long products and is part of the Schmolz und Bickenbach group since 2005 employing 1900 people in Witten.
